ANNE PERDEAUX’S CHOICE
initially appeared to be merely an attractive coffee-table book, but it provides so much more than delightful paintings of 100 different breeds. Each one is described briefly, yet vividly, ending with a summary of key attributes. Especially handy are the reference tables, giving an overview of all the breeds. With clear drawings of feather-patterns, combs and anatomy, plus a basic guide to chicken-keeping, this book manages to be both beautiful and practical.
Runners-up are both by Katie Thear: Starting with Chickens and Incubation: A Guide to Hatching and Rearing. These slim volumes contain a lifetime of information and advice.
