QWhy do my chickens scratch the ground when they are taking food from a feeder?

AAndy Cawthray said: Scratching the ground is a deeply engrained behaviour with the genetic makeup of chickens. Their evolution depended upon this ability to in order to maximise their success in finding food and, despite domestication, they still exhibit this activity. Scratching has resulted in reward or food throughout their ancestry and even when the food is present chickens just can’t seem to stand still.
