ART AND RESCUE
ABOUT A month ago I drove my rather ancient Ford Galaxy to Farrington Gurney in Somerset to collect six ex-battery hens. The large group of which they formed a part had been collected earlier that morning in Gloucester by the British Hen Welfare Trust (BHWT), so they had endured a rather frenetic morning. That day a total of 281 hens were rehomed from Farrington Gurney — I can testify to having to queue and a long line of people formed behind me too. To date, the BHWT has saved 18,000 hens in Somerset alone, and I am proud to have played just a tiny part in that statistic. Read all about the BHWT’s forthcoming British Hen Welfare Day on page 8.
While it is probably pretty clear already that one of my favourite subjects is rescuing hens (page 9), another of my passions is art. Colin Brown clearly loves his poultry as well as capturing them for posterity on paper (page 10), as does Wiltshire’s Chris Jones. As we are keen to know what you think of Your Chickens, and what you would like to see more of in the magazine, please fill in our short survey on page 43 to be in with a chance of winning one of Chris’s fabulous calendars (page 42).
