“It’s a long journey,” said Mum. “Pack some games for the car.”

“I can’t wait to see Laura again,” said Poppy, “and her chickens sound awesome.”

“She was so scared of ours,” laughed George, “and now she’s got four of her own.”

“It’s a shame Dad isn’t coming,” said Poppy.

“Don’t worry about me,” said Dad with a smile and then adding with a laugh: “I’m looking forward to a few days of peace.”

“Remember you’re looking after the chickens,” said George. “Do you know what to do?”

“Easy.” said Dad. “They just need food and water.”

Poppy looked serious. “You haven’t read my instructions,” she said, sternly.

“You must let them out every morning and shut them up at night,” said George.

“And always collect the eggs,” said Poppy, “or they might go broody.”

“Don’t forget to check them all every day to make sure they’re OK,” said George. “How do I do that?” asked Dad. Poppy waved the instructions at him. “It’s all here,” she said. “I’ll be testing you before we go.”

“So much for my quiet weekend,” grumbled Dad. “What if one of them gets ill?”

“Phone Grandpa!” said George and Poppy together.
