IT ISN’T long now before the great and the good in the poultry world come together to show their birds at the two biggest fixtures in the calendar — the National Championship Poultry and Eggs Show (1-2 December) in Telford and the Federation Championship Show (15-16 December) in Stafford. With a nod to this, but also the myriad other fixtures around the country that offer poultry classes, Grant Brereton kicks off his new showing series this month with the aim of inspiring you to have a go.

Keeping chickens is wonderful even if you only want to collect and eat their fresh eggs every day, but equally some keepers — of all ages — want to do a little more and see how their birds, often ones they have hatched themselves, measure up against those belonging to seasoned exhibitors. You may be pleasantly surprised if you are new to this world how well your birds actually do. This was certainly the case for eightyear-old Lewis Wilkinson, who has been taking the circuit by storm and who we profile on page 19.
