Elliott Fox, who is pictured with his Pekin (above), stepped in to look after his teacher, Mrs Coggins’s chickens during the summer holidays (above right). Elliott, who lives in Kirby Muxloe, Leicestershire, loves chickens and already has 16 of his own. “Elliott’s favourite chick is Mrs Coggins’s Lavender Pekin,” said his mum, Karen. “His teacher said he could have it, but it’s a cockerel and we are worried about noise.”

Ruby Allison, 11, who lives on a dairy farm in Longstock, Hampshire, has a favourite hen called Little Bantam, who is 18 months old. “Little Bantam was broody this summer and decided to sit on some duck eggs. Unfortunately she became grumpy and abandoned them after two weeks, but we love her all the same,” said Ruby.

Tony and Lindsay Welch of North Devon took on some featherless ex-bats who have blossomed into beautiful chickens under the couple’s care. They spent the scorching summer of 2018 free ranging among the flower beds.
