SHOW CHAMPION

Your Chickens - - Charlotte’s Chickens -

ZANDER, A red-saddled Yokohama cockerel, became a champion at the Mid Somerset Poultry Show. He seemed very good-natured and his beautiful long white tail feathers were a sight to behold. He is a show bird and I was told by his owner, Dawn De Athe, that he is allowed to free range for a couple of hours a day.

The Yokohama originated in Japan and was imported into Europe in the mid-1800s, supposedly shipped from the port of Yokohama in Japan to France. The birds are famous for their incredibly long tail feathers and they are mainly kept as ornamental birds for showing purposes since their tails need careful care. Yokohamas are sometimes called Japanese Longtails and they can be duckwing, golden, black red, red-saddled or white in colour.
