PUFFIN WAS FOUND as part of a group of 50 horses that had been abandoned in Somerset in 2017. It’s thought the herd had been subjected to horrific cruelty as Puffin and the rest of the group were terrified of human contact. Blue Cross took seven-year-old Puffin to its sanctuary in Burford, Oxfordshire, where her long road to recovery began. Initially, helpers at the sanctuary were unable to get near Puffin to handle her and instead spent a lot of time at a distance. Slowly, staff gained Puffin’s trust and were able to put a headcollar on, lead her and pick out her hooves. With this new-found confidence, it was decided that Puffin was ready to be rehomed. Jane Mansell and her daughter, Emily, first fell in love with Puffin after visiting Blue Cross in the summer and it wasn’t long before the little mare was en route to their home in Buckinghamshire. “Puffin quickly settled in with our retired New Forest pony, Maisy,” says Jane. “We’re lucky enough to keep Puffin at home, so she constantly sees us and her confidence is growing every day. “She happily comes over for her token feed in the mornings and we’re continuing her clicker training, which Blue Cross showed us. She can still be a little nervous but she has improved so much.”
