WHAT HAPPENS TO YOUR HORSE’S TEETH AS HE AGES?

-

Equine teeth are hypsodont. This means that they continually erupt from the jaw throughout a horse’s lifetime to compensate for the constant grinding action of chewing rough fibre. A horse has a finite quantity to each tooth, so as he reaches old age and all of his reserve teeth have erupted, these will eventually become worn down, loose and may even fall out.

Loose and missing teeth will not only be painful, but they will also affect your horse’s ability to eat and maintain a healthy weight. It’s vital, therefore, that as he gets older you proactively manage his dental health.
