Hand harvested straight from the fields – it’s time to enjoy the British asparagus season
St George’s Day marks the start of the eight-week British asparagus season. It’s best eaten freshly picked, but growing your own can be a labour of love. It can take up to three years for a plant to produce any stems, but once it gets going, new spears can shoot up every two to three days – growing up to 10cm in a day. Each spear has to be carefully hand cut when it reaches the right height.
