Mairi McAra (64) changed her style after being treated for breast cancer in 2001. She had a mastectomy with an immediate reconstruction, followed by chemotherapy and radiotherapy. After surgery, she developed lymphoedema – a collection of fluid that has caused her right arm to swell. Mairi says, “The lymphoedema in my arm affected my confidence to begin with, but I always remind myself that it’s a small price to pay for being alive. The shirts and blouses I would have worn before are not comfortable and too narrow on the arms. “Now I wear more round and v-neck tops with floaty or stretchy sleeves. I still shop in Joules, Hobbs and M&S and I also like F&F at Tesco. It took a while to build up my confidence, but I’ve got back the cheeky personality I had in my 20s! I’m also taking to the catwalk in the Breast Cancer Care Scotland Fashion Show. I want to show others you can look good after a breast cancer The Breast Cancer Care Scotland Fashion Show, October 26, the Hilton Hotel, Glasgow. Visit www.breastcancercotland
