What has caught our attention in the news this fortnight…

Captain Birdseye

For generations he’s been in command of advertising Birdseye’s fishfingers. But an eagle-eyed military enthusiast recently spotted Captain Birdseye appeared to have been demoted, with just two gold stripes on his uniform, denoting the rank of lieutenant, instead of a captain’s four. The waters were quickly calmed by Birdseye who said, “To keep himself grounded, the captain often chooses to wear his humble beginnings on his sleeve.” Phew!

Diet avocados

If you’re a fan of avocados but not quite so keen on their calorie count (a typical large fruit has about 330) you’ll be pleased to hear a diet version has been developed by Spanish firm Eurobanan. Grown under special soil and climate conditions, it provides the same nutritional benefits but with less fat. Called The Avocado Light it has all the health benefits of its larger cousin but a third less fat. They are also said to be juicier and to ripen faster. The downside is they are only on sale in Spain, but demand could soon see them appearing in British shops.
