Chance reunion led to finding grandfather’s war grave

YOURS (UK) - - In The Picture -

This photo is of my husband Steve, his cousin Beryl on the left, and me at their grandfather’s grave in Lijssenthoek Military Cemetery. He was killed while serving with the last Surrey Regiment in the First World War in December 1916.

Steve lost touch with Beryl 25 years ago but last year, while shopping in a department store in Enfield, they were reunited when Beryl recognised Steve passing by. For many years he had wondered where his grandfather was buried and Beryl had the answer. She had inherited an attache case containing all the information needed to research further. So it was that we found ourselves travelling to Belgium and with the help of our travel guide, Nick Burch, we found the grave. What an emotional moment for us all, especially with this year being the First World War centenary. Pauline Collins, Enfield
