Nostalgia is a powerful thing. For me it’s not so much about the act of looking back but the comfort of a shared history. Our memories help us connect with one another emotionally; they are the glue that holds relationships together. And in difficult times that’s more important than ever.

Which is one of the reasons why the whole nation was so saddened by the loss of Dame Vera Lynn earlier this month. She’d been such a constant and reassuring presence for so many for so long. You can read our heartfelt tribute on page 80.

Your memories of camping (p83) transported me back to my own childhood holidays – our car packed to the gunnels with Mum, Dad, three (and later four) children, Nan plus two dogs and the camping kit. One holiday stands out for all the wrong reasons. My siblings developed chicken pox but when we tried to leave, the car had sunk into the ground after days of rain and we had to be towed out by the farmer’s tractor!

Stay well, stay safe. See you next issue…
