Hope for a Rainbow at Rainbow Falls

101 Things to Do (Big Island) - - HILO/HAMAKUA COAST -

There’s a pot of gold at the end of one of Hilo’s major thoroughfares. It’s called Rainbow Falls, named for the rainbows that appear when the morning sun shines through the mist.

Take Wai‘anuenue Drive through Hilo and bear right on Rainbow Drive. A parking lot will be on your right. Make the short walk to a lookout and hope for a rainbow. There’s no access to the pond at the base of the falls, so don’t even think about scaling the slippery slopes to get closer. Use a long lens to take photos instead.
