Backstage Shake-Up!

ABC Soaps In Depth - - News -

In a twist no one saw coming, THE YOUNG & THE RESTLESS lost not one but two writers, and executive producer Mal Young has stepped into the headwriter position!

The In Depth Story: Although rumors had been circulating that story consultant Kay Alden would be leaving the show, nobody expected that both she and headwriter Sally Sussman would wind up exiting, with both women reportedly opting to retire. At the same time, CBS confirmed that Young would — while retaining his EP position — also take over headwriting duties.

“He has made incredible contributions to the show since joining the team,” read a statement from the soap’s production company, Sony Pictures Television.

Young originally joined the show as a supervising producer in early 2016 before slipping into the executive-producer slot a few months later.

Protecting the sudser’s legacy is “a responsibility I take incredibly seriously,” the exec told Soaps In Depth earlier this year. “I want to surprise and enthrall the viewers, and move them forward while at the same time making sure not to disrespect the history of what came before.

“This show has put out over 11,000 episodes,” he continued. “I want to re- spect that and stay true to the vision of [creator William J. Bell].”

Asked at the time what he believed viewers want to see, Young’s answer might provide a glimpse into Genoa City’s future. “They want to see the characters they know and love go on amazing journeys,” he summarized. “We have to make sure that the audience is excited about what’s around the next corner!”

With Sussman and Alden (right) out, Jordan and Lily’s journey will now be in the hands of headwriter/ executive producer Young (above).
