What GENERAL HOSPITAL viewer hasn’t occasionally said to him or herself, “No, no, no, why are they doing it that way? It would be so much better if only they would… ” and then spun the unfolding story the way they’d have told it? You’ve all done it, right? Well, so have we here at Soaps In Depth. And now, at last, we’re biting the bullet and revealing how we’d have twisted a few of the show’s plots. First up: Amy’s pursuit of Nathan. Check out our take on the tale, then let us know @soapsindepthabc what you think.

A Beautiful Heartbreak

The Actual Story: Amy used an unwitting Nathan’s image in an advice column that became so popular it got her a publishing deal — but confusingly not so popular that any of his friends or his absent wife saw or heard about it. Equally confusing was Nathan’s decision to keep Maxie in the dark about the situation — despite how things went the last time he kept secrets from his wife!

Our Version Of The Story: After Nathan rode to Amy’s rescue at the Nurses Ball and escorted her down the red carpet, she understandably developed a crush on him. Who wouldn’t? And, with Maxie out of town, he was happy to continue spending time with his new friend, never guessing that she was reading into his every kind word of encouragement to imagine them becoming more than pals. When at last she spoke of the future together that she imagined he, too, was picturing, he let her down gently. She railed against her own stupidity, saying that, of course,

he didn’t want to be with her — she knew better than that. She’d spent her whole life losing out to “popular girls” like Maxie. At that, Nathan stopped Amy in her tracks, wiped away her tears and made it clear that there was only one reason that he wasn’t interested in her romantically — because he was in love with his wife and always would be.

What Happened Next: With Nathan reestablished as the best of good guys — and Amy positioned as a heroine to whom all of us who aren’t a size 0 can relate — Maxie returned to Port Charles and made it her mission to ensure that her hubby’s new gal pal was as confident as she was radiant. And for good measure, the matchmaker decided that she was just the person to find Amy her own Mr. Right!

In our version of the Nathan/Amy story, she’s

not a wannabe homewrecker but a sympathetic sweetheart toward whom Maxie

Cupid’s arrow.
