What’s Next For Julian?

Although GH’s Julian is currently languishing away behind bars, viewers are dying to know when the character — and portrayer William deVry — will return!

The In Depth Story: You’d probably be hard-pressed to find a single GH fan who thinks that Julian is going to serve 15 years in prison. The question is, what will happen once he’s back in Port Charles? While a whole lot of people want to see Julian reunite with Alexis, there are those who still have issues with him having held a knife to his then-wife’s throat. “I’m trying to play that he was protecting his family,” says deVry. “His whole family would have died, and he had to sell something… and what he had to sell was not very pretty!”

One thing the actor doesn’t buy: that Julian has been written into a corner. “I don’t believe in corners,” he scoffs. “Good storytelling can get you out of any corner!”

Interestingly, while some viewers (and a few characters) have put Julian on blast, deVry believes that’s had an unexpected side effect. “Ironically,” he says, “that’s built some support! I don’t think Julian sees himself as a victim. He did what he had to do, and he’s prepared to pay the price. He doesn’t want to pay that price. He doesn’t want to lose his family. But he did what he did to save them, and he’s okay with that!”

Can Julian overcome the naysayers — including his ex — and win Alexis back? Only the writers know for sure, but deVry is up for the challenge. “I’ve enjoyed how hard it’s been for the character to redeem himself in her eyes,” he says. “And in a lot of ways, it’s also difficult for the writers!”

And exactly what do those writers have in store once deVry is back on the canvas? “There will definitely be complications ahead for Julian and Alexis,” teases co-headwriter Shelly Altman. “But whether it will be as a couple or as separate people is yet to be seen!”

“It’s quite ridiculous to say that” Julian’s been written into a corner, muses his portrayer. “That’s a cop-out.”

“Just be glad your crazy Aunt Liv didn’t come after you, too.”
