AFTER HOURS

Donnell Turner (Curtis) invited fans — as well as Vernee Watson (Stella) — to dish about Port Charles, life and martial arts

ABC Soaps In Depth - - Feature Interview -

Last year, GH’s Donnell Turner was a bit nervous about attending his first GHFCW. This year, the hot commodity who brings Curtis to life hosted his very own event! Truth be told, he was still a bit nervous about his Thursday-night hang — which had to be bumped to a new time due to a work conflict. But he had no reason to worry. Vernee Watson stopped in to help him warm up the crowd, and the two actors had fans rolling in the aisles with stories of Aunt Stella’s casting, their first impressions of each other and life in Hollywood. After the veteran actress left, there was quite a bit of interest in hearing more about Turner’s entree into acting and his martial-arts expertise. Then it was time for scene study — which meant more laughs as Turner read old GH scripts with fans, letting them play Curtis while he hammed it up as other Port Charles locals. Tack on an auction, flying stuffed-animal gifts and a DJ spinning groovy tunes, and Turner’s event was a great way to close out the first night of GHFCW!

“When you work with a young man that looks like Donnell, sometimes I do flirt a bit,” Watson confessed. “But I was so into being Stella that when I dealt with him, I told him to put a shirt on! I never went there with him… except one day, he said he’s got to go speak at a women’s conference. I said, ‘That’s going to be a happy bunch of women!’”

At Watson’s audition, “she walked in the room as Stella, and I immediately perked up,” Turner recalled. “It was a wrap. We all knew it was her.”
