The Plan To Breathe New Life Into The Hospital!

If you think more stories are centered on GENERAL HOSPITAL’s titular facility lately, you’re right. Here, headwriters Shelly Altman and Chris Van Etten explain why exactly that is.

The In Depth Story: It’s no coincidence that Stella wound up working at the hospital. “When we bring in a new character who doesn’t need to be in a different field,” says Altman, “we often look for ways to incorporate them into the hospital. It doesn’t have to be as a doctor or a nurse, because many other types of people work in that environment.”

That’s one reason Rebecca Budig’s Hayden worked there before leav-

ing town, and why Stella has become a social worker at the facility. “It is GENERAL HOSPITAL, after all,” adds Van Etten, “and that should be the center of the show. We always look for that balance. Sonny is one of our very important charac- ters, and he — like several other locals — is a mobster. So we naturally have stories taking place in that realm.

“But,” he continues, “we have also found ways to tie him to the hospital, particularly with the story involving Mike’s illness. It’s a really interesting milieu, and it has been the hub around which everything else revolves since the show’s inception. That’s important to us and always will be.”

We doubt anyone imagined Franco would be working at the hospital back when the character was introduced!

When not butting heads with Monica over expenses, Hayden played doctor with a real one!
