THAT’S HOW MANY DOL­LARS the Na­tional Air and Space

Mu­seum wants to raise through a cam­paign on Kick­starter, which

launched July 16. The funds will be used to con­serve, dig­i­tize, and

dis­play the space­suit Neil Arm­strong wore on the moon dur­ing

Apollo 11 in the new Des­ti­na­tion Moon

ex­hi­bi­tion, set to open in

the Mu­seum on the Na­tional Mall in 2020.

Con­ser­va­tion for the suit, which is cur­rently in stor­age, will

in­clude con­sult­ing with ex­perts on the suit’s var­i­ous ma­teri-

als and with peo­ple who helped as­sem­ble it. The suit will be

3D-scanned, and cer­tain parts will be sub­jected to X-ray or CT

scans; the re­sult­ing im­ages will all be avail­able on­line. With that

re­source, you’ll be able to use a 3D prin­ter to make your own

Arm­strong suit.

Donors to the cam­paign are el­i­gi­ble for one of a va­ri­ety of

re­wards and will get be­hind-the-scenes up­dates through­out
