Golden Knights rally for victory in their opener
The College of Saint Rose women’s basketball team held off a late Daemen rally to pick up a 69-66 victory on Friday in its season opener in the Roberts Wesleyan Tournament at Voller Athletic Center in Rochester.
The Golden Knights coasted out to a 39-30 halftime advantage but found themselves down by two points, 66-64, with just two minutes, 22 seconds left in the fourth quarter. Senior Ashley Vanderwall, however, connected on a 3-point basket with only 50 seconds remaining to give Saint Rose the lead for good, and following a pair of Courtney Clasen free throws the Golden Knights had the 69-66 win.
Vanderwall finished with a game-high 22 points while Clasen posted 18 points for Saint Rose. Isa Vara de Rey added 10 points and five rebounds for the Golden Knights.
Tiara Filbert scored 19 points and pulled down seven rebounds for Daemen, which was also playing its first game.
Saint Rose returns to action at 4 p.m. Saturday to take on host Roberts Wesleyan back at Voller Athletic Center in Rochester.
