Q: How did the Lincoln costume designer create the looks for Sally Field and Daniel Day-Lewis? —Sheila L., Chicago

Albuquerque Journal - Parade - - PERSONALITY -

A: The 16th president and his wife “were widely photographed, so there was a wealth of reference,” says costume designer and first-time Oscar nominee Joanna Johnston. “Mary Todd Lincoln had specific color tastes—purples, violets, blues, pinks—which was fantastic. I had all the dimensions for Lincoln’s trademark hat; I worked with a hatmaker in Italy, and it only took two attempts before we got it perfect. Daniel looked great in it!”
