It would be unfair to call Roscoe a publicity hound, but the 8-yearold beagle has certainly had his share of media attention. After fears about bedbug infestations became national news in 2008, the certified bedbug detector was called upon to demonstrate his skills on countless TV shows. It didn’t hurt that he was also really cute. Rescued from a pound in Kentucky, Roscoe works for New Jersey– based Bell Environmental Services. His job takes him all over the New York metropolitan area and as far away as Philadelphia to inspect spaces small and large (think ambulances and corporate offices), says Jennifer Erdogan, a director at the company. One busy day, he covered an entire 50,000-square-foot office building. By contrast, human inspectors may need three hours to do a single room. Off the job, Roscoe lives with five other bedbug detection dogs: three beagles, a Jack Russell terrier and a mixed breed. But there’s little question who’s top dog. “Roscoe is very motivated,” Erdogan says. “He’s always excited to go to work. It’s like a game for him.”
