Owen Wil­son, 47, plays an­other quirky role in the heist com­edy Mas­ter­minds, open­ing Sept. 30 and based on a 1997 bank rob­bery, one of the big­gest in Amer­i­can his­tory. Here are five facts about the Texas-born ac­tor.

1. Wil­son orig­i­nally in­tended to be a writer. His first screen­play was Bot­tle Rocket (1996), co-writ­ten and di­rected by Wes An­der­son and star­ring Owen’s younger brother, Luke.

2. Two of his idols: Wil­lie Nel­son and Win­ston Churchill.

3. Ben Stiller and Wil­son have starred in 10 films to­gether, in­clud­ing the Meet the Par­ents tril­ogy, the Night at the Mu­seum tril­ogy and both Zoolan­der films.

4. Sh­eryl Crow’s song “Safe and Sound” is about their brief re­la­tion­ship (1999–2001).

5. He has a tat­too of a clover on his left shoul­der.
