When school events can disrupt

- By Joyce M. Rosenberg

With children back in class, working parents are again asking bosses for time off for soccer games, school concerts or other events. The early departures and late arrivals can disrupt the routine at a small business.

Experts say owners should be sensitive to employees’ need for periodic lenience — whether or not the staffers are parents. Being flexible is good for morale, and will help a company retain good workers. It might also be required by law; in California, employers must give parents time off for school events.

Many bosses believe that as long as the work is getting done, and that employees aren’t abusing the privilege of leaving for personal events, it’s OK to go to a school game, or leave early for a theatrical performance, or a pro basketball or hockey game. Many staffers will gladly make up the time they miss, or arrange for co-workers to cover for them. If productivity is suffering, an owner does have the right to insist that employees get their work done, and on time.

What if other employees are irritated because a parent leaves early? The boss should let everyone know they have the same opportunity for a good work-life balance. Owners also need to be sure that the staffers left behind aren’t saddled with too much work.
