Chair of SF Dems killed in car crash

SANTA FE — Su­san Popovich, chair of the Santa Fe Demo­cratic Party, died in a car crash in El­do­rado Sun­day, State Po­lice have con­firmed.

Lt. El­iz­a­beth Ar­mijo said in a news re­lease Tues­day morn­ing that Popovich’s Mazda en­tered the in­ter­sec­tion of U.S. 285 and Avenida Vista Grande in El­do­rado around 11:45 a.m. Sun­day and col­lided with a semi-truck that was driv­ing south­bound on U.S. 285. Popovich, 69, was pro­nounced dead at the scene.

State Po­lice re­leased de­tails about the crash Mon­day, but didn’t iden­tify Popovich as the de­ceased un­til next of kin was no­ti­fied.

“Su­san was a force,” the county party said in an email Mon­day. “She stepped into the role of County Chair like no other. She had bound­less en­ergy and a work ethic that was con­ta­gious. She was an ab­so­lute joy to work with. Her pass­ing leaves a gi­ant hole in our Party. Those of us lucky enough to have known her will mourn the loss of an in­cred­i­ble wo­man.”
