Chair of SF Dems killed in car crash
SANTA FE — Susan Popovich, chair of the Santa Fe Democratic Party, died in a car crash in Eldorado Sunday, State Police have confirmed.
Lt. Elizabeth Armijo said in a news release Tuesday morning that Popovich’s Mazda entered the intersection of U.S. 285 and Avenida Vista Grande in Eldorado around 11:45 a.m. Sunday and collided with a semi-truck that was driving southbound on U.S. 285. Popovich, 69, was pronounced dead at the scene.
State Police released details about the crash Monday, but didn’t identify Popovich as the deceased until next of kin was notified.
“Susan was a force,” the county party said in an email Monday. “She stepped into the role of County Chair like no other. She had boundless energy and a work ethic that was contagious. She was an absolute joy to work with. Her passing leaves a giant hole in our Party. Those of us lucky enough to have known her will mourn the loss of an incredible woman.”
