GLOBAL PORTRAITS: Looking at portraits through the lens of what the art form tells us about an era’s sociopolitical forces — like colonialism or the evolution of technology — is the focus of The Thoma Foundation’s latest exhibition.

“Eye Contact: Portraits in the Global Age” is the first exhibition in which the foundation will show selections from both its digital art and its Spanish Colonial paintings collections, spanning from the late 18th century to 2015. Included is New York artist Robert Wilson’s video portrait of Lady Gaga, a remake of an 1806 portrait of teenage French aristocrat Madamoiselle Caroline Riviere. Other selections are 1776’s “Portrait of Ana Josepha de Castaneda y de la Requere,” a painting of the Spanish-born wife of a sugar planter living in the New World, and digital artist Daniel Rozin’s “Selfish Gene Mirror,” which is embedded with a camera and makes temporary portraits of those who stand in front of it. The exhibition opens tonight, Friday, Aug. 10, with a reception from 5-7 p.m. It will stay up at Art House, 231 Delgado St., for one year.

DAYS OF PEACE AND LOVE: Stars who reigned back in the days of peace and love will be stopping in New Mexico tonight for the “Hippiefest” tour. The show features Rick Derringer (known as the vocalist for The McCoys’ “Hang on Sloopy” and later his single “Rock ‘n Roll Hoochie Koo”); Vanilla Fudge, most famous for its 1967 heavy rock cover of The Supremes’ “You Keep Me Hangin’ On”; Mitch Ryder & The Detroit Wheels of “Devil with a Blue Dress” fame; and Badfinger featuring original member Joey Molland. Hippiefest takes place tonight, Friday, Aug. 10, at Camel Rock Casino, 17486A U.S.-84, at 8 p.m. Tickets are $30-$40 and can be purchased at camelrockcasino.com.
