Eight-race cham­pi­onship meet is to­day

The state cross coun­try cham­pi­onships are to­day at Rio Rancho High School. There are eight races this year, down from 10 the last sev­eral years.

The Class 5A boys be­gin at 11 a.m., with Cleve­land’s Yonas Haile look­ing to suc­cess­fully re­peat as state cham­pion af­ter post­ing the fastest time of any boy in any clas­si­fi­ca­tion last No­vem­ber.

The Class 5A girls, where El­do­rado’s Jas­mine Tur­tle-Mo­rales, last year’s 6A run­ner-up, is the likely pre-race fa­vorite, cap the day at 1:05 p.m.

One of the fea­tured races is 4A boys at 10:30 a.m., when Kirt­land Cen­tral’s Kashon Har­ri­son, the state’s top run­ner, looks to win a sec­ond con­sec­u­tive cham­pi­onship.

The 4A girls, where Zoe Hunter of Al­bu­querque Academy is among the top run­ners to watch to­day, start at 12:35 p.m.

Cleve­land and Academy’s boys and girls both won state ti­tles a year ago.

The first race is 9:30 a.m., 15 min­utes fol­low­ing the open­ing cer­e­monies. All the races will end in­side the Rio Rancho High foot­ball sta­dium. The awards pre­sen­ta­tions fol­low the last race.

Tick­ets are $10 for adults and $5 for stu­dents, se­niors and mil­i­tary.
