Filling Ginsberg’s seat now disenfranchises voters
THE EFFORT to quickly nominate and confirm a new Supreme Court justice to fill the seat of Justice Ginsburg effectively disenfranchises a large portion of the American electorate. Early and absentee voting is already underway throughout the United States. Up to 40% of the electorate voted early or by absentee ballot in 2018 and estimates show that number will be higher this year. A nomination now would not be before the election. The 2020 election has already started. This nomination should not be pursued until after the winner of the election has been inaugurated.
