WHAT WILL HAPPEN?
This is still an open question with the answer based on politics. It will depend on whether a national grassroots response to the increasingly unfair and dysfunctional healthcare system we have today can overcome the economic and political power of the many corporate stakeholders in our medical-industrial complex. As healthcare professionals, we will all find clinical practice more satisfying and our patients happier and healthier if we can achieve universal coverage, as proposed by Teddy Roosevelt in 1912, for the first time in more than 100 years.
