Helps heart at­tack sur­vivors

Heart at­tacks lead to scar tis­sue in the heart and harm­ful changes in its shape and func­tion, tech­ni­cally called “re­mod­el­ing.” But high-dose sh oil sup­ple­ments can re­duce the dam­age, ac­cord­ing to a study of 360 heart at­tack sur­vivors, pub­lished in the Amer­i­can Heart As­so­ci­a­tion’s jour­nal Circulation. “Our nd­ings show that omega-3 fatty acids are a safe and e ec­tive treat­ment in im­prov­ing car­diac re­mod­el­ing, so it may be promis­ing in re­duc­ing the in­ci­dence of heart fail­ure or death, which are still ma­jor health-care bur­dens to pa­tients who su er a heart at­tack,” said Ray­mond Kwong, MD, se­nior au­thor of the study. For 6 months, pa­tients took a daily dose of sh oil con­tain­ing 4 grams of omega-3 fatty acids, listed as EPA and DHA on prod­uct la­bels.
