OIL PAINTERS OF AMERICA’S WESTERN REGIONAL EXHIBITION

Oil Painters of America’s annual Western Regional Exhibition opens September 7 at Mary Williams Fine Arts.

Each year Oil Painters of America hosts two regional exhibitions in addition to its national show held in the spring. The goal is to assemble among the best representational oil paintings that show high quality in draftsmanship, color and composition. The pieces are also diverse in style and subject matter, making the exhibition appealing to collectors of all types of art.

The 2018 Western Regional Exhibition, featuring juried paintings by more than 85 member artists who reside in the West, will take place September 7 through October 6 at Mary Williams Fine Arts in Boulder, Colorado. The show will kick off with a reception and awards ceremony on opening night from 5 to 8 p.m. Acting as this year’s juror of awards will be OPA Signature Member Mike Desatnick, who will view the works and make his selections for prizes that total up to $11,500, including a $4,000 Best in Show. The awards presentation will

get underway at 6:30 p.m.

Juried in the show are Associate and Signature members, including John C. Moffitt, Nathaniel Skousen and Nancy V. McTigue. Along with the artists whose works have been selected to appear in the show, Master members from the Western region are eligible to submit works. This year nine artists will showcase new pieces— Daud Akhriev, Nikolo Balkanski, Albert Handell, David Hettinger, Robert Johnson, Ramon Kelley, Calvin Liang, Craig Tennant and Jeffrey Watts. On view in the Western Regional Exhibition will be everything from landscapes and city scenes to wildlife and figures. Moffitt will present his Trompe l’Oeil painting Sheriffs Office, which depicts items of the Old West, while both Skousen and McTigue will have figurative works in the show. Skousen’s Initiation depicts a young girl painting—and with the title, perhaps it is her first time delving into the colorful palette before her. McTigue’s portrait Leileinia shows a woman with a blue flower in her hair.
