During her long career as a professional artist, Joan Metcalf has painted and exhibited many scenes from the Pacific Northwest, including forests, gardens, mountains and coastal paintings. Recently, her inspiration has come from wine country and she has combined the graceful images of grapevines with her oil and metal leaf technique. Describing this series, she says, “I have explored different applications of composition metal leaf to intensify its shimmering effect. These form a background for my images with ever-changing reflections as you move past the paintings.” A collection of her grapevine paintings will be exhibited during October at Cathedral Ridge Winery in Hood River, Oregon.
