Imet Derek Penix at the Oil Painters of America National Juried Exhibition several years ago. As the editor of this magazine as well as Western Art Collector, I try to go to this event every year. I’ve missed a few. But I believe this was one in Dallas. I liked Derek’s work a lot when I saw it. So did everyone else. In fact, the year we met he won the American Art Collector Award of Excellence and he also won the Best of Show award from the group.
Recently, Derek reached out to me. I think I’ve seen him one other time since he received our award. He sent me an email and asked how much it would cost to take our back cover. I was impressed that he was interested in it. It’s a key spot in the magazine. When I gave him the cost he said he would think about it and get back to me.
Several days later, I heard again from Derek. He wanted to go ahead and purchase the back page. This was for our October issue. We sent him the paperwork and went through the process and several weeks later our October issue landed with our collectors and had a beautiful Penix cityscape on the back cover. 40 by 40 inches. A wonderful painterly work in Derek’s signature style.
Remember, this is the October issue. On September 24, Derek emailed me again. He was shocked. Someone had seen the painting in his advertisement and had already called him and purchased the painting. We weren’t shocked, however, because we hear about such things happening each and every month. We’ve been hearing it since we started publishing this magazine nearly 14 years ago and we still continue to hear it today.
Here is the note from Derek:
“The very first advertisement I took with American Art Collector was the back cover of the October issue and it sold to a collector who saw it there before the first of the month! I definitely see the value of advertising with American Art Collector to enable my work to be seen by top art collecting eyes who may not see my work by walking into a gallery or seeing it on social media. It is a clear path I plan to take from now on.”
P.S. These are the types of stories we love to hear. It has been our desire since day one of this magazine to connect artists, galleries and collectors in a way that have never been done before. It warms our hearts to know that this is still happening!
