East Coast Convergence
The annual Oil Painters of America Eastern Regional Exhibition opens October 28 at McBride Gallery in Annapolis, Maryland.
Each year the Oil Painters of America hosts a number of exhibitions, including their national show and two regional events. Its next Eastern Regional Exhibition will happen October 28 through November 25 at McBride Gallery in Annapolis, Maryland. On view will be nearly 120 juried works by associate and signature members of the group that highlight the traditions of oil painting within classical and contemporary compositions. Master members of the organization are also invited to submit pieces, with 13 artists participating in this year’s show. The group has the goal of assembling “the finest display of representational oil paintings. The focus in the jurying process will be to select paintings that show the highest quality in draftsmanship, colors and composition, emphasizing diversity in
representational style and subject matter.” This assortment of artwork creates an allencompassing exhibition that appeals to the varying tastes of collectors.
Still lifes on view will include Ester Wilson’s Promise and Angela Campbell’s The Chicken or the Eggplant?, while figurative paintings include Conversation at the Fortress by William Rogers and Pat Wattam’s Guitarman. There also are a number of landscapes in the show, including the dock scene Painting the Tugboat Red by James Swanson, as well as Yellow Spring Creek by Steven S. Walker and Local Color Down by the River by Karen Ann Hitt.
In Walker’s painting
Creek, the artist depicts the edge of a creek that shows its colors and reflections as light bounces off its surface. The rolling water in the background billows with energy, while the stillness of the water in the foreground presents a serene calmness, yielding a unique juxtaposition of elements.
To kick off the show, McBride Gallery will host the opening reception on October 28 from 1 to 4 p.m. During the event will be the awards presentation at 2 p.m., where the winners of this year’s prizes will be announced. Serving as the awards judge is Master member Kathy Anderson.
