Studio: Wizart Animation (Russia) Directors: Vladlen Barbe, Maxim Sveshnikov Distributor: Vertical Entertainment Release Date: October 11 Box Office: $14 million Synopsis: When the vengeful Snow Queen discovers she hasn’t destroyed everything with her icy curse—namely the glassmaker’s orphaned children Gerda and Kai—she kidnaps the young boy, forcing Gerda to embark on a perilous journey across the wintery wastes to rescue her brother and remove the Snow Queen’s enchantment once and for all. The Odds: While Russian audiences celebrated the film (which has also found distribution in many foreign territories), most U.S. critics were unimpressed with the less-than-cutting-edge CG animation from a country that has graced us with such animation auteurs as Yuriy Norstheyn, Fyodor Khitruk and Aleksandr Petrov.
