Director Mamoru Hosoda ( Summer Wars) has crafted another acclaimed hit with his latest film, which took home top honors across the globe—including 2013’s Japan Academy Prize for Animation of the Year. Produced by Madhouse and Hosoda’s Studio Chizu, the film centers on Hana, a bright student with a sunny future whose life takes a turn when she falls in love with a wolf-man and gives him two hybrid children. When the wolf-man dies, Hana’s fear of discovery leads her to take her unusual kids off into the country to build a new life, away from the bustle and prying eyes of the city.

The two-disc DVD set and three-disc Bluray combo ($34.98) include special features like U.S. commentary, stage greetings from a variety of premiere events, a Director’s Version PR video, trailers and teasers. This film—which pleased Japanese audiences so well it became the fifth highest grossing film in the country for 2012 and spawned numerous storybooks, manga, art and production books—is an excellent choice to please the fans of sentimental, magical, beautifully crafted 2D animation on your holiday list.
