Designing the Secret of Kells

Animation Magazine - - Frame- By- Frame - By Tomm Moore & Ross Stewart [Cartoon Saloon, $35]

The richly detailed, Celtic-inspired art behind Irish indie studio Cartoon Saloon’s 2009 film The Secret of Kells saturates every inch of this 236-page limited edition hardcover, available from the studio’s website and Stuart Ng Books. Through distinctive pieces of character, background and element concept designs, readers get to follow the talented artists and animators on their journey to the film’s distinct look, which blends medieval art influences with haunting natural locations and brilliant colors. With over a dozen awards and nominations under its belt, it’s safe to say all the painstaking pattern detailing paid off. We just hope we don’t have to wait five years for an artbook from the Saloon’s upcoming feature, Song of the Sea.

12It’s a busy home entertainment day with Batman: Assault on Arkham, Looney Tunes: Platinum Collection Vol. 3 and Disney Bluray premieres Tarzan, Hercules and Bedknobs and Broomsticks.
