Key moment of inspiration: I wanted this movie to go deep into Brazil and its culture, and I have always been fascinated by the Amazon. I did extensive research about the rainforest, but it was not until I was physically there that I could truly feel its significance and magnitude. Toughest challenge in making the movie: For me, usually the toughest challenge is the story — especially on sequels, where you not only have to continue with the main characters’ journeys, but also integrate that storyline with a new one. On top of that, this movie had a lot of musical set pieces that were very complex. Pivotal scene: The first is when Jewel meets her father, Eduardo. It was a very emotional, complex and important moment in the movie. The second is the air soccer match, where Blu not only loses the game but the respect of his father-in-law. It was definitely one of the most technically challenging sequences in the movie. On the state of the animation business: Animation continues to do well, but the challenge is to continue to search for new ideas and interest- ing stories to share with audiences. It’s exciting to see animation projects coming from other international markets, such as Brazil, Argentina and France. Favorite movie or animated character of all time: I have many favorites, but Bambi and Dumbo are at the top of my list. I have a great appreciation for these films due to their beauty and emotional tones. I’m also a huge fan of Miyazaki’s movies. Career beginnings: I’ve been at Blue Sky for over 20 years, and it has been my creative home since I graduated from the animation program at the School of Visual Arts in New York. Best advice: Follow your instincts and work on projects that you love. Never say “yes” if you don’t believe in it. Animation is already hard when you love it, imagine if you don’t ...
