Q&A with Brenda Chapman

Animation Magazine - - Miptv Special Report -

Aveteran of the animation industry, Brenda Chapman brings to the task of judging this year’s short film competition at Annecy a ton of expertise honed over the years at the likes of Disney, DreamWorks Animation and Pixar on films ranging from Beauty and the Beast to directing credits on The Prince of Egypt and Brave. Animation Magazine: Do you see any of the films in advance or do you watch them all at the festival? Brenda Chapman: No, I won’t. It will all be festival screening. Animag: Have you met the other short film jurors before? Chapman: I don’t think so — if I have, it’s been a long time ago. My brain isn’t retaining what it used to. Animag: Are there any films or filmmakers in the shorts competition that you are particularly interested in seeing? Chapman: I hate to be boring, but I’m purposefully not diving too deep into what films and filmmakers are in the competition so that I can be completely open and objective when I see the films for the first time. Animag: Have you been on a jury at a festival before? If so, how did you like the experience? Chapman: Yes. I was on the Lunafest film festival a few years back in San Francisco. I felt that I was an anomaly on the jury panel. It wasn’t a very satisfying experience. But I am very optimistic for the Anncey Animation Festival! Animag: What, to you, makes a successful animated short? Chapman: A clear story, characters one can relate to and imagery that supports the characters and story … to name just a few things. Animag: Have you been to Annecy before? If so, what was your favorite experience there? Chapman: Yes, I attended Annecy in 1995, when DreamWorks SKG set up a booth there for the very first time. We had one little table and some posters of the logo. That was it. Just being there was pretty magical. It’s an amazing festival! Animag: What are you most looking forward to at this year’s festival? Chapman: Just being a part of it — meeting with the other jurors and the organizers. And of course, I’m looking very much forward to the films! [
