Spec­i­fi­ca­tions

Ma­te­ri­als

• 1/8 yard each teal and red-vi­o­let batik dots* • 1/3 yard each medium blue, light pink and dark pink batik dots* • 3/8 yard each orange, blue-vi­o­let, medium pink and green batik dots* • 1 yard light blue batik dots* • 2 yards cream batik* • Back­ing to size • Bat­ting to size • Thread • Ba­sic sewing tools and sup­plies *Batiks from Hoffman Cal­i­for­nia Fab­rics used to make sam­ple.

Cut­ting From teal batik dots:

• Cut 1 (21/2" by fab­ric width) strip.

From red-vi­o­let batik dots:

• Cut 1 (21/2" by fab­ric width) strip. Sub­cut strip into 8 (21/2" x 41/2") J rec­tan­gles.

From medium blue, light pink & dark pink batik dots:

• Cut 3 (21/2" by fab­ric width) strips each fab­ric.

From orange batik dots:

• Cut 4 (21/2" by fab­ric width) strips. Sub­cut 1 strip into 7 (21/2" x 41/2") L rec­tan­gles.

From blue-vi­o­let batik dots:

• Cut 4 (21/2" by fab­ric width) strips. Sub­cut 3 strips into 23 (21/2" x 41/2") K rec­tan­gles.

From medium pink batik dots:

• Cut 4 (21/2" by fab­ric width) strips. Sub­cut 1 strip into 7 (21/2" x 41/2") M rec­tan­gles.

From green batik dots:

• Cut 4 (21/2" by fab­ric width) strips.

From light blue batik dots:

• Cut 3 (21/2" by fab­ric width) strips. • Cut 7 (21/4" by fab­ric width) bind­ing strips.

From cream batik:

• Cut 2 (41/2" x 601/2") strips along the length of the fab­ric. Sub­cut strips into 45 (21/2" x 41/2") I rec­tan­gles. • Cut 2 (21/2" x 601/2") N strips along the length of the fab­ric. • Cut 2 (51/2" x 601/2") O strips along the length of the fab­ric. • Cut 2 (51/2" x 501/2") P strips along the length of the fab­ric.

Com­plet­ing the Pieced Units

Use 21/2" by fab­ric width strips in colors spec­i­fied in the fol­low­ing steps to make all strip sets.

1. Join one dark pink strip and one light blue strip with right sides to­gether along length to make an A strip set; press. Re­peat to make a sec­ond A strip set.

2. Sub­cut the A strip sets into 16 (41/2"-square) A units as shown in Fig­ure 1. 3. Re­peat step 1 to make three B strip sets us­ing green and orange strips, and two C strip sets us­ing medium blue and medium pink strips.

4. Re­peat step 2 to cut 23 B units and 16 C units re­fer­ring to Fig­ure 2. 5. Re­peat step 1 to make one strip set each in the fol­low­ing colors: light pink and light blue D; dark pink and medium pink E; light pink and medium blue F; light pink and teal G; and green and blue-vi­o­let H. 6. Sub­cut the strip sets into seven each 41/2"-square units as shown in Fig­ure 3.

Com­plet­ing the Blocks

1. To piece one Block 1, se­lect two each A, B and C units, and three I, one J and two K rec­tan­gles.

2. Ar­range and join the units and rec­tan­gles to make three rows as shown in Fig­ure 4; press all seams to­ward the rec­tan­gles. 3. Join the rows to com­plete one Block 1; press.

4. Re­peat steps 1–3 to make a to­tal of four Block 1's.

5. To com­plete one Block 2, se­lect one each B,D, E, F, G and H unit, one each K, L and M rec­tan­gle, and three I rec­tan­gles.

6. Re­peat steps 2 and 3 to com­plete one Block 2 re­fer­ring to Fig­ure 5. 7. Re­peat steps 5 and 6 to com­plete a to­tal of three Block 2's.

8. To com­plete one Block 3, re­peat steps 1–3 for Block 1 re­fer­ring to Fig­ure 6 for po­si­tion­ing of units and rec­tan­gles. Re­peat to make a to­tal of four Block 3's. 9. To piece Block 4, re­peat steps 5 and 6 for Block 2 re­fer­ring to Fig­ure 7 for po­si­tion­ing of units and rec­tan­gles. Re­peat to make a to­tal of four Block 4's.

Com­plet­ing the Quilt

Re­fer to the As­sem­bly Diagram for po­si­tion­ing of the block rows and strips as needed.

1. Ar­range and join the blocks in three rows of five blocks each re­fer­ring to Fig­ure 8 for block po­si­tion­ing; press.

2. Join the rows with the N strips to com­plete the pieced cen­ter; press.

3. Sew O strips to op­po­site long sides and P strips to the top and bot­tom of the pieced cen­ter to com­plete the top; press.

4. Cre­ate a quilt sand­wich re­fer­ring to Quilt­ing Ba­sics on page 109. 5. Quilt as de­sired.

6. Bind edges re­fer­ring to Quilt­ing Ba­sics on page 109 to fin­ish.
