America needs more politicos like Straus

Re: Aug. 17 article, “Abbott blames Straus for all that the special session didn’t get done.”

In reading about Gov. Greg Abbott’s “sour grapes” view of House Speaker Joe Straus, I am reminded of a time when there were people who made decisions with their heart and cared less about their lower extremity.

I have been a yellow dog Democrat for most of my life and had nothing good to say about the other party. I must say that Straus deserves praise on both sides of the aisle. I think he cares enough to look squarely at the powers that be and votes his conscience. It is Abbott who wants nothing more than to blame others for his failed agenda. Political parties need people like Straus to speak for and represent the people of this state and this nation. ROBERT BYRAM, AUSTIN
