New U.S. commander backed by every senator
WASHINGTON — Gen. David Petraeus was unanimously confirmed Wednesday by the Senate as the new Afghan war commander, replacing Gen. Stanley McChrystal after his ouster over controversial remarks in a magazine article. Petraeus won overwhelming praise from both Republicans and Democrat
“Gen. Petraeus is a pivotal part of our effort to succeed in Afghanistan — and in our broader effort to disrupt, dismantle, and defeat al Qaeda — and he has my full confidence,” President Barack Obama said after the Senate’s 99-0 vote.
