Netanyahu offers Hamas prisoner swap

Austin American-Statesman - - FRIDAYBRIEFING -

JERUSALEM — Under pressure from a snowballing public campaign by parents of an Israeli soldier held captive for four years by Hamas in Gaza, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu confirmed that Israel had agreed to a proposal to free 1,000 Palestinian prisoners in exchange for Staff Sgt. Gilad Shalit, who was seized in June 2006. But he said the most dangerous prisoners wouldn’t be allowed to return to the West Bank and “mass murderers” wouldn’t be freed, harming chances of any deal with Hamas.
