Small plane crash on Catalina ignites brush fire, leaves one person dead
AVALON — A single-engine plane crashed on Catalina Island after its pilot reported a medical emergency, killing one person and igniting a brush fire nearby. Fire Inspector Matt Levesque said one body was found when authorities reached the scene. It was not immediately known how many people were on board. The wreckage was discovered about two miles from the island’s airport, Airport in the Sky. The fire was 80 percent contained but would probably burn through the night, authorities said.
