Small plane crash on Catalina ig­nites brush fire, leaves one per­son dead

AVALON — A sin­gle-en­gine plane crashed on Catalina Is­land af­ter its pi­lot re­ported a med­i­cal emer­gency, killing one per­son and ig­nit­ing a brush fire nearby. Fire In­spec­tor Matt Levesque said one body was found when au­thor­i­ties reached the scene. It was not im­me­di­ately known how many peo­ple were on board. The wreck­age was dis­cov­ered about two miles from the is­land’s air­port, Air­port in the Sky. The fire was 80 per­cent con­tained but would prob­a­bly burn through the night, au­thor­i­ties said.
