There is no choice

Re: June 27 editorial “Tough call: jobs or environment.” I have problems with the headline. Houston learned that because of air pollution, it was difficult to attract employees. Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama and Florida are realizing that it will be nearly impossible to attract vacationers and employees with a polluted Gulf.

According to the U.S. Travel Association, travel has a $94 billion economic impact in those states, and travel supports the jobs of about 310,000 jobs in those states. I have been in those states on several trips, and nearly all of them involved some time on the Gulf Coast.

Don’t assume that it is a choice of jobs or environment. There is no choice. It is jobs and environment. Jerry Akers
