Mom ruled insane in baby death

Austin American-Statesman - - LOCALBRIEFING -

A San Antonio woman who told authorities that the devil made her mutilate and dismember her 3-week-old son was found not guilty by reason of insanity Thursday, in a deal that sends her to a state mental institution rather than a trial and possible prison sentence.

Defense attorneys entered the plea on behalf of Otty Sanchez, 33, and it was accepted shortly thereafter as part of an agreement with prosecutors.

Scott Wesley Buchholz-Sanchez was 3 weeks old in July 2009 when authorities received a frantic 911 call from the boy’s aunt. They arrived to find his mutilated body and Sanchez wailing that the devil made her do it. Sanchez was charged with capital murder and found competent to stand trial. But Bexar County District Attorney Susan Reed said that three examinations by separate doctors have determined that she was legally insane when she killed her son.

“She will be committed until the court decides she is not a danger to herself or anyone else,” Reed said.
