200,000 state workers cut to minimum wage
SACRAMENTO — Roughly 200,000 state workers will receive minimum wage paychecks in July under terms of an order issued Thursday by Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger. July pay for most hourly state employees will be withheld to the minimum allowed by federal law —$7.25 an hour — and then restored once legislators agree on ways to close California’s $19 billion deficit. State Controller John Chiang, who cuts state paychecks, refused to comply with the order, but a state appeals court ruled that he had to comply.
