BLAINVILLE, Que­bec — Tom Wargo and Russ Cochran shared the lead at 7-un­der 65 af­ter the open­ing round of the Mon­treal Cham­pi­onship.

The 67-year-old Wargo shot un­der his age for the first time in an of­fi­cial tour­na­ment, al­though he said he fired his age or lower four times pre­vi­ously in smaller events.

Wargo, a for­mer club pro who taught him­self to play at 25, has four ca­reer Cham­pi­ons Tour wins. His last was in 2000.

Jay Don Blake, Joey Sin­de­lar, John Cook, Tom Purtzer, Jay Haas and James Ma­son were each a shot back at 66.
